Maths
At Oakleaf Primary, we follow a mastery curriculum to teach mathematics. Lessons are carefully developed and sequenced to support all learners to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts ensuring all develop mathematical mastery. The White Rose scheme is used to support planning and provision. All learners take part in a daily mathematics lesson, where they are encouraged to problem solve, try challenges, ‘have a go’ and view ‘mistakes’ as an important part of the learning process.
At the heart of the mastery approach is the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach where learners are first introduced to a new concept by working with concrete resources and pictorial representations leading to a better understanding of abstract concepts.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to support learners to make connections between different concepts and build on prior learning. Learners are given a variety of opportunities to apply the skills and knowledge they have been taught through daily problem solving.
Concepts are revisited in daily fluency sessions ensuring learners build a secure and adaptable understanding.
Mathematical talk is an essential part of lessons and learners are given regular opportunities to engage in purposeful mathematical dialogue enabling them to clarify, refine and extend their knowledge and understanding.
The impact of our mathematics curriculum is that all learners will be able to master each domain of mathematics, building on their prior learning in order to acquire a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. They will leave KS2 with strong foundations in number sense and as confident and flexible mathematicians
